Frequently Asked Dryer Vent Cleaning Questions

What is a dryer vent?

Some people confuse the dryer vent with the lint trap in your dryer that should be cleaned after every use. The dryer vent is the tube behind your dryer that often goes through an exterior wall or through the attic to an exhaust vent outside the home.

How can I tell if my dryer vent needs cleaned?

You can tell this by the amount of time it takes for your clothes to dry. 2-3 cycles or more could mean you need to have us come out and clean them. If your dryer is hot to the touch when it is on, this could indicate a clogged exhaust vent as well. Lint accumulation around or behind your dryer could be caused by a dryer vent blockage. A humid, warm, or musty-smelling laundry room may also be signs your dryer vent is due for a cleaning.

Why do I need to have my dryer vent cleaned?

Aside from energy savings and making clothes dry faster, the biggest reason to have your dryer vent cleaned is fire prevention. Over 15,000 dryer fires cause over $100 million in damage to US homes every year.

How often should I have my dryer vent cleaned?

Most appliance manufacturers recommend cleaning your dryer vent once a year.

I have plastic tubing as a dryer duct in my attic. Is this safe?

No. a dryer vent should be made of solid metal ducting. There should be metal tape, rather than screws which could cause clogs, holding dryer vent ductwork together.

Will cleaning my dryer vent save me money?

Your dryer is one of the most expensive appliances in your home in terms of energy cost. You can save hundreds of dollars in electricity or gas by having your dryer’s exhaust vent cleaned so it can operate as efficiently as possible.
