At K&M Steam Cleaning, we’re making a deliberate change in how we advertise: We’re targeting more specific searches across more of the services we already provide.
For years, customers have found many of our specialty services through organic search, referrals and repeat business. Meanwhile, our paid advertising leaned heavily on a few steady, proven categories.
Now we’re putting advertising dollars behind more of those specialty searches. Some are paying off. Some need more work. Some may ultimately prove that our money belongs elsewhere.
That’s a useful business lesson: Growth requires testing, measuring and being honest about what the results actually mean.
Advertise More of What You Already Do Well
A business can become so closely associated with its best-known service that customers overlook everything else it offers.
People know K&M for carpet cleaning in Austin. But our work also includes upholstery cleaning, rug cleaning, dryer vent cleaning, air duct cleaning, tile and grout cleaning, odor removal, carpet repair, pressure washing, commercial VCT floor care, stone counter restoration, drapery cleaning and wood floor cleaning.
These services were already part of our business. What’s changing is how actively we advertise them.
For another business owner, the question is worth asking: Are you promoting the full range of work your team does well, or mostly buying attention for the service everyone already knows?
Why We’re Going Further Into Long-Tail Searches
A broad search describes a category. A more specific search can tell you what someone needs, where they need it and sometimes what problem they’re trying to solve.
“Cleaning services” leaves a lot unanswered. “Travertine floor cleaning and restoration in Austin” gives us a much clearer starting point.
That’s the thinking behind our move toward long-tail searches: phrases that describe a more specific need. Google’s guidance supports using specific keywords to reach customers interested in a particular service, while recognizing that greater specificity can reduce reach.
We’re looking for opportunities to connect our existing expertise with customers searching for exactly that kind of help.
More Services, More Ways to Find K&M
Our advertising now spans a wider mix of service categories and local targeting.
Carpet cleaning remains central, including a separate carpet cleaning campaign targeting higher-income ZIP codes. That geographic test helps us explore where our advertising produces worthwhile opportunities.
Upholstery cleaning lets us connect with customers looking specifically for help with sofas, chairs and other upholstered furniture.
Rug cleaning and drop-off rug cleaning on Daisy Drive address different customer needs. Our drop-off campaign focuses on a 10-mile radius, making convenience part of the offer.
Dryer vent cleaning and air duct cleaning in Travis and Williamson counties give customers direct paths to services they might not associate with a carpet cleaning company.
Local tile and grout cleaning, odor removal in Travis and Williamson counties, and carpet repair each address a distinct problem. A customer seeking carpet repair may have a very different project from someone booking routine cleaning.
Pressure washing and commercial VCT floor care in Travis and Williamson counties expand our visibility for exterior cleaning and business floor maintenance.
Local stone counter restoration, drapery cleaning in Travis and Williamson counties, and wood floor cleaning in Travis and Williamson counties help bring more attention to specialty work.
The business principle is simple: Give each customer a clear way to find the service they actually need.
Stone Cleaning Shows Why Specific Searches Matter
Our stone surface cleaning and restoration services illustrate this approach especially well.
K&M provides limestone floor cleaning and restoration, marble floor cleaning and restoration, terrazzo floor cleaning and restoration, granite floor cleaning and restoration, and travertine floor cleaning and restoration. Our stone services include cleaning, honing, polishing and sealing, with work extending to countertops, showers and outdoor stone surfaces.
Those capabilities give us meaningful ways to describe our work.
Someone might search for “marble floor polishing in Austin,” “travertine cleaning and sealing in Cedar Park,” or “stone countertop restoration in Williamson County.” These are examples of the more specific searches we want our marketing to address.
For business owners, the lesson is to describe your services in the language customers use when they have a real problem. A broad service name is a starting point. The material, location and desired result can make the message much more useful.
Some Tests Work. Some Don’t.
We now have advertising activity across more categories, including specialty services we’re particularly interested in growing.
But launching more campaigns does not make every campaign a success.
Some tests are producing encouraging results. Others are less convincing. A campaign with very little activity may need time or a different approach. A campaign generating inquiries still needs to produce worthwhile jobs.
Our advice to other business owners is to look beyond clicks. Track qualified inquiries, booked appointments, completed work and the cost of acquiring that business.
A reported advertising conversion is useful information. It should be checked against what actually happened in the business.
Build on Proven Advertising While Testing New Opportunities
Steady, proven advertising gives a business a foundation. Testing more specific searches can help reveal additional opportunities.
For K&M, that means giving more visibility to services customers previously found primarily through organic search or referrals. It also means learning which combinations of service, location and customer need deserve continued investment.
We’re sharing the process because transparency matters. We already did this work. Now we’re buying more opportunities to be found for it—and paying attention to which opportunities earn their place.
Whether you need carpet cleaning, drop-off rug cleaning, upholstery cleaning or specialized stone surface restoration, K&M Steam Cleaning wants to make finding the right service easier.
